Lately, I have been hearing all about coconut oil and how it can be used for baking, cooking and even cosmetic purposes.  After hearing about all the wonders that are coconut oil, I started researching.  What I found was amazing, there are countless ways that coconut oil can be used and how beneficial it can be.

Once I learned about all the ways coconut oil can be used, I couldn’t wait to try it out.  I love the smell and taste of coconut.  I did find it interesting that some people could tell it was added or used in a recipe and some couldn’t.

I tried multiple recipes to see if the flavor would be noticeable, the first thing I used it for was cooking ground beef.  I know that sounds weird but we use organic beef extremely low in fat, so we need to add a little water or oil to cook it without burning sometimes.  For this test, I substituted my regular oil with the Tropical Traditions Gold Label Extra Virgin Coconut Oil.  I could taste the difference, it gave the meat a sweet flavor and I absolutely loved the aroma it made in the house while cooking.  Maybe it was because I knew it was in there but my husband could not smell or taste the difference while my daughter could smell something different but not detect a flavor change.

My next test was in our daily smoothies.  Morning smoothie usually consists of two cups mixed fruits, a banana, juice (or ice if I am cutting calories) and 6-8oz yogurt.  The first trial was not the best, I added the coconut oil direct from the jar and it did not want to blend or mix very well.  This was an error on my part as coconut oil is solid at less than 76 degrees and a liquid at higher temps.  For my second attempt, I warmed and melted it and it blended perfectly.  The taste? AMAZING!!! Loved it, again I could totally taste it and the husband couldn’t.

I used it for baking a yummy chocolate and peanut butter fudge type desert, replaced the butter on my English muffin with it and also used it in my bread maker bread recipe. UM!!! Both turned out wonderful and I loved that added coconut taste that the coconut oil added to all my dishes.

  1. I’ve replaced other fats with coconut oil in my cooking with wonderful results. My new favorite is a midday smoothie with coconut and hemp.

  2. We use it for lots of things! We use it for cooking, making raw chocolate, in smoothies, oil-pulling, and making deodorant, suntan lotion/bug repellent, and rash cream. 🙂

  3. I would use coconut oil in cooking anytime that I would otherwise butter or oil….. I’d also like to try oil pulling.

  4. I would like to try it, but it’s expensive. IF I win, I could try it without risk of spending $ on something I might not like. Thanks for the chance to win

  5. My absolute favorite thing to make with coconut oil lately is “blueberry pie pancakes” from Chocolate Covered Katie’s blog. I love that you can use it in recipes and also on the griddle.
I will spend some time on your blog too! I am also an “older” mom and often find myself as the oldest lady in a group play date so my son can relate to those his age!
